We would like to invite you to participate in the Europe-Philippines International Workshop on Modeling, Simulation and Grid Computing (MODEL 2009) to be held on May 4 - 6, 2009 in Holy Name University, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines.

MODEL is a workshop series that is convened every two years since 1999. It started in November 1999 in Ateneo de Manila University (MODEL ‘99), followed by MODEL 2001 in MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (Iligan City), MODEL 2003 in Philippine Science High School (Quezon City), MODEL 2005 in the University of Cebu (Banilad Campus, Cebu City), and MODEL 2007 in Boracay Regency Resort and Convention Center (Boracay Island, Aklan).

MODEL 2009 is being organized by the Ateneo de Manila University Grid and High Performance Computing Group (A-GRID) in cooperation with the Computing Society of the Philippines (CSP) and Holy Name University.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

1. To provide a forum for exchange of ideas, information, and research outputs on modeling, simulation, scientific computing, cluster computing and Grid computing among academics, research scientists, industry practitioners, and students.
2. To promote the development of mathematical and computer modeling, simulation, scientific computing, cluster computing and Grid computing in the Philippines.
3. To promote research collaborations between Philippine institutions and international institutions, specially between Europe and the Philippines.

SCOPE:

MODEL 2009 will feature tutorials on Cluster and Grid Computing by experts from Europe and Asia, keynote talks, special lectures by invited speakers, and research paper presentations on modeling, simulation, and scientific computing, cluster computing and Grid computing. It is supported by two international projects: the EUAsiaGrid project (http://www.euasiagr id.org/) funded by the European Commission and the Germany-Philippine Collaboration on Grid Computing Project, funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research.

Good news to tourists and Boholano vacationers!

Effective March 16, 2009, the Zest Airways will fly daily from Manila to Tagbilaran at 9:05 AM and daily from Tagbilaran to Manila at 11:00 AM. The expected time of arrival (ETA) in Tagbilaran is at 10:20 AM while the expected time of arrival in Manila is at 12:15 PM. This new flight route by Zest Airways increases the total number of incoming flights to the city from six to seven flights. Boom Boom lost to Ruiz by UD

It is unfortunate that our fellow Boholano Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista lost by unanimous decision (UD) to Heriberto Ruiz yesterday (November 22) in their fight as undercard of the Ricky Hatton – Paul Malignaggi title fight.

Boom Boom was knockdowned and got a cut near the eye from a headbutt in the third round. Inspite of his condition, he courageously continued to fight until the end. Ruiz emerged as the winner with the following scores 78-72, 80-70 and 77-73 from the three judges. With this loss, Rey dropped to 26-2 with 19 knockouts.

In spite of the loss, I am confident that Boom boom will get back someday and win a world title for the country. He is still young and has many more fights ahead of him.

Nonito defended his IBF Flyweight title

Congratulations to Filipino Champ Nonito “The Flash” Donaire Jr for successfully defending his IBF flyweight title against South African Moruti Mthalane during their fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The fight looks even in the first five rounds but became bloody when Nonito intensified his attack by throwing combinations of heavy punches in the sixth round. Nonito’s aggressiveness paid off and blood began to flow in Mthalane’s face. The heavy blood flow prompted the referee to call for a time out and asked the ring side physician to check on Mthalane's condition. Mthalane got a big cut in the eye and with the advice of the physician, the fight was stopped.

Nonito, a Boholano by birth since he was born in Talibon, improves to (20-1, 13 KO's) while Mthalane dropped to (22-2, 15 KO's). In another boxing event, IBF super flyweight Champion Vic Darchinyan knocked out Cristian Mijares of Mexico in the 9th round during their fight at Home Depot Center, California few minutes before the Donaire-Mthalane fight. Darchinyan’s win made him the new king at 115 lbs by unifying the IBF, WBC and WBA super flyweight titles.

To recall, Darchinyan was knocked out by Nonito during their fight at Harbour Yard Arena, Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States last July 7, 2007. In fact, such knock-out earned Donaire the "Knock out of the Year" and "Upset of the Year" awards.

The news that Nonito will move up to 115 lbs will hopefully realize the Donaire-Darchinyan II.

Although this blog is to promote the wonders of Bohol however, I would like to share some tips on technie matters which might be useful to others ...

Have you been in a situation wherein you want to convert your pdf files to text files but you do not have a software in your machine to convert them or you do not want to download online software to avoid risks of worms and trojan viruses?

Well, an online facility will do it for you, just visit the Data conversion online, browse and locate the files that you want to convert and click the Go button. However, it could not convert encrypted or secured pdf files but I think there are ways to do it, but I am still researching on how to do it.

Boom2x succesfully defended his title!

Congratulations to our fellow Boholano Rey "Boom boom" Bautista, for successfully defending his WBO Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight title against Eden Marquez of Mexico during their fight last night at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel & Casino, Lahug, Cebu City, Philippines.

In the first round, Boom boom threw only few punches and patiently study the style of Marquez. The latter, on the other hand, was very aggressive and threw as many jabs as he could. In short, Marquez dominated Boom boom in Round 1.

In the second round, Boom boom became the aggressor and stunned Marquez with a heavy left cross. Sensing that Marquez was hurt, Boom boom continued his attack with heavy punches, fired a left hook and dropped Marquez with 1:50 to go in the round.

Although, Marquez was grimacing in pain, he tried to beat the referee's count and continued the fight but only to be knocked down again few seconds later. The referee stopped the fight with 1:11 remaining in the round.

To Boom boom, his handlers, coach and training team, CONGRATULATIONS!

Death is inevitable...

News about death is everywhere... Some have died due to natural causes (e.g sickness), others are due to accident like my friend Enrik and others get their death from their fellow human being (e.g. war, suicide, bombing, etc).

The inevitableness of death tells us that life is too short and life is so fragile that we have to take care of it. For me, when it is your time, then that's it... however, this view is quite simplistic and surely many of you will not agree with this and I don't want to argue it here. The point that I want to drive is whether there is a way for us to know when it is our time to die.

With that question in mind, I checked the Internet and found a website which will determine when one will die using the following parameters: date of birth, gender/sex, body mass index, smoker/non-smoker and mode (normal, pessimistic, sadistic and optimistic).

Before you visit the Death Clock website, you have to know first your BMI or body mass index from http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/website.

The parameters used are quite limited so it is all up to you if the predicted date of death is belieavable or not.

Heroes ceremony for C130 plane fatalities

Per update from friends who also know Sgt. Enrik Lobrigas is that all of them (9 plane crews), who perished in the C130 Air Force Cargo plane crash, will be honored with a heroes ceremony today (30 August) at the Villamor airbase in Manila. Their caskets, without their bodies, will only contain their respective uniforms and paraphernalia. A one night wake will follow and after which, the caskets will be brought to their respective families' homeplaces.

To the Lobrigas family, me and my family are one in extending our prayers and sympathy with you....

To my friend Enrik, good bye and may your soul rest in peace....

One of the crews of C130 plane is a Boholano!

One of the crews of the C130 air force plane that crashed in Davao gulf last Monday night (25 Aug 2008) is a Boholano. He is Sgt. Constantino Enrique Lobrigas.

Sgt. Lobrigas or Enrik, as we call him, is a childhood friend, classmate for two years (Grade 5 & 6), a mentor in riding a bike and a neighbor in San Miguel, Bohol. He is the youngest in the family in a brood of six.

He graduated with a degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and then, joined the Philippine Air Force (PAF) like his two elder brothers.

The fastest way to Tagbilaran from Cebu City

The fastest way to go to Bohol (Tagbilaran City) from Cebu City and vice versa is by traveling through any of the fast crafts of Supercat, Ocean Jet or Weesam Express. With the recent increase on the Supercat's number of trips to Bohol, the Tagbilaran-Cebu and Cebu-Tagbilaran routes have now 10 trips per route per day and these do not include the trips of the ferry boats that also travel regularly between the two cities.

Below are the schedule of daily trips of the fast crafts that travel between Tagbilaran City and Cebu City:

Travel time is approximately 1 hr and 45 minutes and fare ranges from P400-P500.

Supercat's fast crafts are docked in Pier 4, while the vessels of Weesam and Ocean Jet are in Pier 1. Pier 4 and Pier 1 area just 30-45 min away by taxi from the Mactan International Airport and the fare is just less than P150 using the taxi's meter.

You can also visit Bohol via its northern town at Talibon, Bohol. Cebu-Talibon route has two trips daily at 12noon and 10pm while the Talibon-Cebu trips are scheduled at 8am and 10pm. The Punta Cruz Watch Tower in Maribojoc, Bohol

The Watch Tower in Maribojoc is located in Punta Cruz, a 7-8 km barangay away from the town proper of Maribojoc on the way to Loon, Bohol or 20-21 km away from Tagbilaran City. The watch tower was constructed in late 1790s as a look-out against intruders of the town or the province.

Getting there is easy. From Tagbilaran, take a bus or vhire that is bound to Tubigon and then, drop off at around 7 km from Maribojoc at the junction leading to the watch tower. From the junction, it is around 500 meters walk downhill if you come without a service vehicle. Fare of the public vehicles to the Watch tower from Tagbilaran is around P25 while the entrance fee is very minimal at P3-5.

If you have a GPS or Global Positioning System Unit, the coordinates of the tower is at 9.7304577 degrees North and 123.7923256 degrees East.

Opps, before I forget.. if you intend to stay longer in the area and want to take a swim in the sea, do not forget to bring with you your own provision (i.e. food, snacks, drinking water, etc).

A Paradise in Calape, Bohol

One of the places that I have visited in my recent home visit to Bohol is the Isla Hayahay Beach Resort and Restaurant. The resort is located at the Barangay Lomboy, Pangangan Island of Calape, Bohol (Coordinates: 9.8837582 N, 123.8274187 E).

The place is ideal if you want to take a break from work, if you want to take your family out from the noises in the city, if you want to go on diving and snorkelling and view the different marine life of the island, or if you just simply want to be on solitude.

How to get there? Getting there is easy... Once you are in Bohol, take a bus or a V-Hire (Van for Hire) whose route will pass the town of Calape, Bohol. Drop at the town's public market, and then inquire which tricycle is bound for Pangangan Island. The island is just 4.5 km from Calape and it is accessible by a causeway.

How about the amenities and services? If you wish to stay overnight, Isla Hayahay can provide you the accommodation that you need, food that you desire, boat for island hopping, FREE fishing and snorkelling at your own leisure, and eco tour around the island where you can enjoy the attractive scenery of the Lawis Marine Park or view the Giant Clam during low tides.

Proposed projects must seek to promote, strengthen or institutionalize indigenous mechanisms for participatory governance and should be under the following categories:
